Organic Movement · Abstract Inquiry

Two bodies of work
One way of listening.

Every painting begins the same way: the ground is prepared, and then something is allowed to arrive. In Organic Movement it arrives through the thread, released to gravity. In Abstract Inquiry it arrives through the canvas, which is given time until it speaks. One practice lets go. The other waits. Both are attention.

What they share

Neither practice illustrates an idea. In both, the painter sets conditions and then gets out of the way, and in both the work is finished by someone else: gravity in one, stillness in the other, and in every case the person standing in front of it. This is what art that listens means. The Taxonomy of Abstraction reads both on the same nine dimensions, so a thread painting and an inquiry canvas can be compared by what they do to a room, not only by how they were made.

Questions

What is the difference between Organic Movement and Abstract Inquiry?

Organic Movement is Ritu Raj’s thread-painting technique: thread soaked in oil paint replaces the brush and is released across wet canvas, so gravity, viscosity and friction shape the mark. Abstract Inquiry is a listening-based practice in oil and acrylic, in which the painter sits with a canvas until it signals what it needs, and stops when the painting becomes still. One releases control; the other waits for it to be given.

Which came first?

Abstract Inquiry runs from 2020. Organic Movement was developed in 2024 and has continued alongside it. Neither replaced the other.

Can a painting belong to both?

Each painting has one home collection. Some also belong to a second, such as Geometric Splendor or Black & White.

How do I choose between them?

Stand in front of one of each. Organic Movement tends to move, and the eye follows the line. Abstract Inquiry tends to hold, and the eye rests in the field. Collectors often find they want one for a room of energy and the other for a room of quiet.

Not sure which one is yours?

Describe a room, a feeling or a question you are sitting with, and Find Your Painting will point to the works that meet it. Or come and stand in front of both at RituStudio.
