Out of Darkness
The light that breaks through is hard-won.

My most emotionally charged body of work: transformation, memory and endurance. These works are not meant to comfort. They are meant to reveal, to hold shadow and silence until something breaks through.

“There’s something about black. You feel hidden away in it.” Georgia O’Keeffe
“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Leonard Cohen

Every painting begins bright: gold spray paint, layered color or gestural brushwork. Then the canvas is covered in black oil mixed with alkyd medium, and raked through until the buried color comes back in unexpected, visceral ways. The black doesn’t just obscure. It intensifies the light beneath it.

These paintings feel dark, but they are not hopeless. Each rupture is a glimpse of what endures underneath, a reminder that even when we feel buried, something luminous remains.
