Rewriting Visual Language
Available · in the studio, Phoenix
The language of the image starting over — Out of Darkness as the condition for rewriting what visual communication can mean.
“Rewriting' gathers fragments of the moment and renders them eternal in layered abstraction.”
Rewriting (2024) is about returning to the page — the emotional and conceptual one. This 60 x 60 inch oil painting from the Out of Darknesscollection engages with the metaphor of revision: the act of rethinking, revisiting, and re-imagining one’s story.
The surface is layered with passages of warm gray, off-white, faded ink tones, and bright accents of orange and blue. Linear gestures mimic written text, but they drift — unreadable and rhythmic. Scratched lines and areas of heavy impasto give the piece a tactile memory, like a manuscript revised again and again.
I created Rewriting during a period of internal edit. A time when I realized that stories — personal or collective — are never finished. They’re always shifting beneath us. This painting reflects the tension between permanence and permission — the power to change what we once believed.
It resonates with the poetic abstraction of Cy Twombly and the textual impulse of Jenny Holzer, though mine leans away from language and toward its residue.
Rewriting isn’t about erasing. It’s about seeing things again — and letting that seeing shape what comes next.
Where to see it. In person at RituStudio, Phoenix, by appointment. Represented by Jarrow & Goodman, Los Angeles.
The space it needs
- Wall
- At least 8 ft wide
- Ceiling
- 9 ft or more
- Light
- Low ambient light amplifies luminous passages — dark-wall installation ideal
- Daylight
- Built from graphite and charcoal, it neither warms nor cools with the sun, yet direct daylight flattens the dark it needs. A dim wall or low raking light lets the muted white passages glow and the texture rise.
Lives best in
Hotel lobby 5/5
A grand lobby needs a work that stops strangers in seconds, and these layered strata of charcoal gray and faded ink, shifting with every change in light angle, do exactly that without explaining themselves.
Living room 4/5
Rewriting Visual Language earns a 4 here because its five-foot field of graphite and shadowed umber becomes a sustained presence rather than décor, rewarding the slow, repeated looking that a living room allows.
