Beyond the Frame
Available · in the studio, Phoenix
The painting that refuses its own edges — atmosphere that keeps going past the boundary the frame set.
Beyond the Frame (2023) is a gesture toward what lies just out of reach — the part of experience that resists containment. This 48 x 48 inch acrylic on canvas painting is part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, and it explores how abstraction can suggest a world larger than what is seen.
The composition stretches across the surface with streaks of light blue, warm blush, and mineral grey. The edges seem to fade or break, as if the painting itself can’t hold all that it wants to say. There’s movement at the margins — an invitation to imagine the image continuing, expanding, dissolving.
This piece was born from a meditation on boundaries — not just visual, but emotional. What if a canvas could gesture past itself? What if art didn’t try to conclude, but to hint?
The work finds kinship with Helen Frankenthaler, especially her later soak-stain paintings where gesture and surface merge into atmosphere. Like Frankenthaler, I wanted this piece to breathe — to allow space for what isn’t said.
Beyond the Frame doesn’t point to a single truth. It evokes possibility. It trusts the viewer to complete what’s missing, to feel the silence around the form as much as the form itself.
As part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, this painting resists finality. It’s a whisper toward what’s beyond — the unknown, the unfolding, the unsaid.
Where to see it. In person at RituStudio, Phoenix, by appointment. Represented by Jarrow & Goodman, Los Angeles.
The space it needs
- Wall
- At least 5 ft wide
- Ceiling
- 8 ft or more
- Light
- Natural light transforms this work — morning and evening light read differently
- Daylight
- Midnight blue and graphite keep it steady through the day, with the rust and deep madder warming slightly at dusk. The contrast is gentle, so direct sun washes it; let window light reach it sideways.
Lives best in
Living room 5/5
Beyond the Frame earns a 5 here because its four-foot square of graphite black, deep madder, and rust holds a living room wall without overpowering conversation, and the morning-to-evening light shift keeps the work alive through the day.
Bedroom 4/5
A 4 in the bedroom, where the olive green and graphite ground the composition into something quiet enough for night, though the restless gestural energy means the painting never fully settles into the stillness a sleeping room needs.
