Blue Hole
Available · in the studio, Phoenix
The hole in the blue — not an absence but a pull, the atmospheric depth that draws you through rather than holding you at.
Blue Hole (2023) is a study in depth — not just physical, but psychological. Part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, this 72 x 48 inch mixed media painting invites the viewer into an abyss that is both meditative and sublime.
The composition is built around a central circular void — a darkened space surrounded by waves of cobalt, turquoise, and deep ocean green. Textures radiate outward like underwater light refractions or geological sediment. This is not a black hole. It’s a blue one — vast, calm, endless.
I created Blue Hole while reflecting on stillness. Not silence, but the moment when everything slows into presence. It reminds me of floating in deep water — where sound fades and thought unravels. The painting doesn't represent anything specific; it is the experience of descent into self.
In tone and structure, this piece resonates with the immersive color work of Anish Kapoor, particularly in how it uses darkness to open space rather than close it. Like Kapoor, I’m interested in how voids can feel full — how looking into them becomes a form of reflection.
As part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, Blue Hole sits at the intersection of sensation and surrender. It asks you to stop, breathe, and fall in — not to get lost, but to become still.
Where to see it. In person at RituStudio, Phoenix, by appointment. Represented by Jarrow & Goodman, Los Angeles.
The space it needs
- Wall
- At least 8 ft wide
- Ceiling
- 9 ft or more
- Light
- Natural light transforms this work — morning and evening light read differently
- Daylight
- Midnight blue and graphite hold steady near a window, and the strong contrast keeps the pull of the hole clear in bright rooms. Morning or evening light raking the surface gives the depth a physical edge.
Lives best in
Living room 5/5
Blue Hole earns its place as the room's anchor: the deep midnight and graphite core creates a gravitational center that holds a living room together without competing with furniture or conversation.
Bedroom 5/5
The somber mood score and the downward pull of charcoal into midnight blue make this painting work the way sleep works, drawing the eye inward and quieting the body before the room does.
