Visual Echoes of Vermont

5 × 6 ft · Acrylic on canvas · 2024

Painted over. It became Sunken Forest

Vermont as visual echo — the landscape after the color has been held long enough to know what the form says on its own.

This painting no longer exists.

In July 2026 I painted over it. What stands on it now is called Sunken Forest, a green field with no center, and the vertical comb running the full height of that painting is the comb of this one.

I did not paint over it because it failed. I stood in front of it and felt nothing, and the topography was still magnificent. So the image went and the body stayed.

What Vermont was: a canvas split down the middle, black on the left, white on the right, and a combed wave running vertically through the seam so that both halves carried the same undulating grain. No color at all. The whole painting was that division and that wave, and the tension of a surface worked identically on either side of a line.

That grain is what carried forward. If you stand close to Sunken Forest you are looking at this painting's ridges, running top to bottom under the green.

This is the quietest transformation I have made. The others crossed languages. A geometry painting became a gesture painting. A spiral became a confluence. This one did not translate anything. It only re-saturated. A black and white forest became a green one, and the grammar held.

The space it needs

Wall
At least 8 ft wide
Ceiling
9 ft or more
Light
Any lighting — monochrome palette is lighting-agnostic
Daylight
Obsidian and spectral gray keep it steady, but the soft rust and warm ochre do warm under western afternoon sun. Light from the side shows the texture; an east wall keeps the echoes quiet.

Lives best in

Office 5/5

The near-absence of color keeps the piece from competing with a working mind, while the textural density at scale gives the room gravitas, so the painting is present without being a distraction.

Boardroom 5/5

Five by six feet of structured tension in obsidian and spectral gray commands the wall behind a table without theater, and the restrained color range lets every voice in the room carry more weight than the art.
