Passion Unleashed

Passion after the restraint breaks — the atmospheric energy of what was being held and what it looks like when it finally isn't.
Passion Unleashed (2023) is an eruption — a declaration of presence and power through pure pigment and motion. This 72 x 72 inch acrylic painting from the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection is a testament to emotion at its most raw and embodied.
The canvas explodes with reds, oranges, and pinks, clashing and coalescing like flame and heartbeat. Streaks of black and deep burgundy cut through the surface like breathless interruptions. No area sits still — every inch is alive, shifting, vibrating with layered brushwork and gestural force.
I painted Passion Unleashed in one unbroken session, not from concept, but from feeling. It’s not an image of passion — it is passion. The kind that rises without permission and demands space. There’s no restraint here, only surrender.
The work connects with the expressive violence of Kazuo Shiraga, who used the body itself — feet, momentum, weight — to create his visceral surfaces. Like Shiraga, I believe passion is best recorded not in symbol, but in action.
Passion Unleashed doesn’t ask to be understood. It asks to be felt in the body — to stir something primal, urgent, full of risk and heat.
As part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, this piece captures the moment emotion escapes language and becomes form. It is not quiet. It is not safe. It is gloriously alive.
Where to see it. In person at RituStudio, Phoenix, by appointment. Represented by Jarrow & Goodman, Los Angeles.
The space it needs
- Wall
- At least 8 ft wide
- Ceiling
- 9 ft or more
- Light
- Natural light transforms this work — morning and evening light read differently
- Daylight
- Vivid red and hot pink run hotter under west afternoon sun, and the black and burgundy ground flattens in glare. North or east light lets the heat stay painted rather than amplified.
Lives best in
Living room 5/5
Passion Unleashed earns its 5 here because a living room is the one domestic space built to absorb confrontation, and this six-by-six wall of dark gloss, deep madder, and burnt umber demands exactly the kind of sustained, unhurried looking that only a living room allows.
Bedroom 4/5
The primal heat of the deep madder and dark gloss reads as energy rather than rest, so the bedroom works only if the owner wants a room that charges rather than calms, which some do, earning the 4 but ruling out anyone who sleeps lightly.
