Horizons as Possibility
The Edge of What Could Be

The horizon as potential rather than limit — the line that separates what is from what hasn't happened yet.
Horizons as Possibility (2020) is part of my Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, a series where I explore space not as a fixed place, but as a shifting suggestion of what might be just beyond reach. This 48 x 48 inch acrylic on canvas offers a meditative field where soft washes of blues and grays meet uncertain bands of yellow and rose — an ambiguous, almost dissolving horizon.
The painting resists narrative. There is no clear foreground, no destination, only an open expanse that invites the viewer to project their own longings, fears, and possibilities onto the blurred horizon line. The work is about potential, about the emotional and psychological spaces we inhabit when we look toward what’s next.
In spirit, Horizons as Possibility echoes the atmospheric minimalism of Hiroshi Sugimoto, whose seascapes hold the horizon as both an anchor and an elusive threshold. Like Sugimoto, I am fascinated by the horizon not as a place, but as a space of meditation, a marker of possibility, tension, and unknown futures.
Yet, while Sugimoto’s horizons are photographic and still, mine lean into painterly ambiguity — where the line wavers, dissolves, and breathes, reflecting the instability of hope itself. This painting became a place where I could sit with uncertainty, letting the paint whisper rather than declare.
Horizons as Possibility is an invitation to linger in the unresolved, to find comfort in ambiguity, and to imagine new spaces beyond the known.

The space it needs
- Wall
- At least 5 ft wide
- Ceiling
- 8 ft or more
- Light
- Natural light transforms this work — morning and evening light read differently
- Daylight
- Prussian blue and near black keep it steady through strong daylight, and its contrast holds near glass. Morning and evening tint the mustard and soft lilac differently along the horizon.
Lives best in
Living room 5/5
Horizons as Possibility earns its place in a living room because its slow drift from shadowed umber into pale gray and soft lilac rewards the long, unhurried looking that only a personal space allows.
Bedroom 4/5
Morning light pulling silver and dusty pink from the near-black ground makes this a painting that changes with you, and its mood of longing sits quietly enough that it does not crowd a room meant for rest.
